It is about twelve or thirteen miles from Rothes to the sea. A bit of a walk. Yes, that is Spey, giving its name to the region. If you follow it, it will take you right to the estuary. This too is Scotland. A river flowing through green hills made of fields and woods until it is welcomed by the sea and wind. Don’t ask what year it is or what day, because here time has its rules and sets a stage which you might not recognise. No use asking in what modernity that bridge was raised or in which middle ages those cottages were built. If you have started out as you should at first light, you will see that dawns here are much longer than elsewhere, and that the birdsong accompanying the sunrise is different. In the echo of this harmony, Glenrothes, singing in the glass with balsamic flashes of not-quite-ripe fruit whereas to the palate it boasts an entire palette of scents and aromas which only the first-fruits of the season can give.
